This will be more of a blog.. a lot of basic life updates and other boring stuff will be posted here

So little to see but progress none the less

Months like this one can be very discouraging. This last month has had the goal of getting the south wall (work wall) of the garage re-done. It has not only been the typical rabbit hole but, a giant one with so many tunnels in so many directions that it seems to never end.

As the old Sheetrock was removed the discovery of over compressed fiberglass insulation was the first if many discouraging discoveries. Next was that the electrical that was not a “stock” home circuit but rather one of the added ones from the sub panel. The more I looked, the more I found. Junctions with a combination of Copper and Aluminum wiring, Junctions that were not in boxes, electrical ran through receptacles instead of “T” connections and soo many extra wires.

After all these and more discoveries, it was clear that there was a lot to do starting with evaluating the plans and “Stock electrical”. The lighting can be integrated with the existing electrical in the Office and Laundry so that will be a quick fix. (YEA!) the receptacles however will need a new leg from the stock breakers on the opposite end of the house. ( a whole new can of worms)

The new leg involved cleaning up the mess that was already there. As of today, it is still not quite where I want it but it is ready for the new leg. The downside is that means a lot of attic time. For those of you that do not know, that is time is very contortionistic movements, confined spaces, and high temps.

Starting with feeding electrical into the north wall, I embarked on the attic experience of traveling 60 feet with a slow contortionistic movement of 16 inches at a time. Pulling wires along the journey and enduring temps STARTING at 126º F (52.2º C). If you are not aware, these temps are extremely dangerous and staying in these temps to long can result in Heat exhaustion, Heatstroke and ultimately death. The biggest difficulty is that these times are measured in minutes, not hours or days.

At this moment, the new leg is above the garage but there is still so much that has to be done before it can be added, starting with removing the tons of excessive electrical that was discovered in the attic above the garage and just a good overall cleaning.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE…

First day at the new house…

OK, so I had a little time today and was going through fixing some things on the site when I realized it has been over a year since my last post. It is funny to think how crazy I thought it was this time last year. A LOT has happened since then.

At the time, we had diverted our plans from moving back east to staying here in Central California because I had just accepted a new job. We had sold the house that I renovated so we had a little $$ floating around (Burning a hole in our pockets) so we decided to by a house here. After some disappointment, we were able to find a house in our budget that met our needs. This new (Old) house needs a LOT of work. We closed on it late summer 2018 and began the process of getting it ready to live in. Re-insulating the walls, tearing out any evidence of Carpet ( it has some EXTREME animal odors) and simply getting it inhabitable. Since moving in, we have Finished (except flooring) the 2 kids rooms. relocated the propane tank, replumbed the kitchen drain, tore out a ton of rotten wood “stuff” from the yard, knocked out a few walls, punched a hole in the garage to install a man door, re-soldered the dishwashers circuit board, treated for subterranean termites – then dry wood termites, took out some trees and a HUGE bush, and all around made a mess. For the first several months we ALL lived in the front room while bedrooms were being completed.

Although I have recorded bits here and there on my phone, I have not posted much because of the lack of time. Now that the money is back to a monthly budget I may be able to start getting some up. That is all great but at this point we still have a TON of work to do to live “Normal” again. So here is the list of to-do’s

1- Re-model the South wall of the garage (tool storage and work space) – this is currently in progress with the door being the first big step.

2- Re-do the master bathroom (shower converted to Curbless, new lighting, new toilet, Tile throughout, insulation for sound, and paint)

3- Re-do the master bedroom (insulating walls for sound, electrical, paint

4-Hallway – (new paint, flooring, lighting)

5-Bedroom and hallway flooring completed

Getting to this point would be a HUGE accomplishment and would allow us to live Semi-Normally. One of the biggest “To be determined” is insulating the tile (and Carpet) against the concrete floors. I have seen a few ways to do this, I have just not had time to determine the best solution for the budget.

6- Tear out the front room flooring and fill in the sunken floor so that all the floors in the house are at the same level and finish the front door and entry area. ( New french doors into the front room, paint, lighting, flooring, ) – once this is done, family room and dining room will be moved into here.

7- Tear out the Family room and dining room flooring and fill in the sunken floor so that all the floors in the house are at the same level. Paint and re-floor these rooms (pretty simple)

8 – Office & laundry re-model (details TBD)

9- Kitchen (Details TBD but basically a complete tear out and re-do)

10- New HVAC throughout.

11- Insulate attic space for supreme efficiency

A – Somewhere among all this the YARD need attention . That will have to be outlined in another post. since this one is getting TOOO long.

Stay Tuned…..

Hold on Just a Minute

Hold on everyone, what happened? No Posts? well, there is a reason for that. I tried to go full time doing Dillysadv, but the reality is I was not able to dedicate the amount of time it takes to it due to family and other obligations. Changes to our family’s finances also may have played a part. Am I gone forever after this….. you tell me. I do still have content that has yet to be posted, I do still want to share the projects that I work on. The catch is, with the adpocolips and all the other changes to the monetization, I cannot justify hours of work a week to do so with the income only being $50/ month… That is right only fifty dollars US of income for a month of work between taking, organizing, and posting pictures, and videos on this site, youtube, Instagram, facebook, twitter, patron, and all that other goodness.

Now like I said, I do still want to post, I will keep the store up and will consider making it have the better functionality of a good site to hopefully help to justify continuing to post…

As for now, it is TAX time here and I will need to dedicate all spare time to that in hopes that I don’t have to pay out a small fortune in Taxes.

Stay tuned, there is a lot more still to come.

Summer 2017

Holy Macaroni, summer 2017 has been one of the busiest times I can recall.  THANK YOU for sticking around. In the next few weeks videos should be starting again and life will get back on track. With the chaos of the summer, we have evaluated a lot of the time used on the projects we are recording as well as the time to put together the videos that are the result.  Because of this re-evaluation, we have changed the format and processes of the videos.. It is possible that the more focused and formal project videos will come occasionally it just wont be all of the time.

As far as the happenings, our kids had summer fun classes (a program that the local schools put on) so I had to drop them off and pick them up from that twice a week. My son had his first Cub Scout Day Camp ( this is not a 1 day thing here for some reason but rather a 5 day from 3pm to 8 pm camp) I had volunteered for being a “Walker” for my sons group for all of the days (big mistake) it was 114ºF most of the time we were there.  Overall we did survive and I believe we made it as good of an experience as we could for the boys in our group.  In addition to both of those, we has a pre-set arrangements with a neighbor to go swimming in their pool from 1-3pm  twice a week ( all fun except that I cannot swim in chlorinated or salted pools because of skin sensitivity) so I enjoyed the heat of just chilling on the side lines.

That was it for the set in stone things but on top of that I had a trip to Utah to visit my grandfather, the one that I worked for and who got me started in my mechanical career once I returned from my 2 year religious service.  He had been diagnosed with a really aggressive lung cancer that had spread through his entire body and was given 1-3 months. It was a great experience to be able to say my goodbyes. He passed away the day after I left. I will be posting more about this experience as well as some thoughts I have been having recently a little latter.

We also had to have a few family camping trips in the trailer that were a ton of fun.

And last but not least the reason that we had so much going on, I had gotten the Large projects for work than I have had since I shut down my business.  some of them were more learning experiences than profit making, some were just fun and some were reasonably profitable.  I have had to create a wish list of some future purchases with tools because of this summer. I believe that $10k should cover it  ;-).. all joking aside,  we have had to consider some real strategic moves to justify the expense.. more will be on that when I am able.

I did find out toward the end of summer that although school is starting soon for the kits, the chaos is not over for me yet.  Our renters have moved out of our first home back in Utah and for the sake of stress and liabilities, we have decided to sell.  In talking to our realtor, there is about $15k or more of work that needs to be done.  After seeing what position this would put us in,  my wife and I decided that I will be going to Utah for about a month and doing the work myself.  Admittedly, I am nervous about the whole thing because of the amount of work that is needed ( new roof, new carpet, new paint, siding repair, Railings repaired, fencing repaired, and I am sure there is much more I will find when I get there.  I will be recording videos while I am there so, there is something to look forward to.

Thank you all SO MUCH For hanging in there.. I am so excited for what has come and may still come…
