Lucy – Movie Review

lucy-movie-2014-poster-scarlett-johansson-

Rating: R – (swear it was PG-13)
Time: 1 hour 30 minuets
Type: Action / Science Fiction (some comedy)
Dilly Rating: Keeper
Language: Very little
Main characters: Scarlett Johansson
Released: June 4 , 2014

I will admit, from the first time I saw the movie trailer I wanted to see this one. Looking back I did not realize that it was rated “R”, I was sure it was PG-13. Language is minimal nothing, specific sticks out. I guess the rating could be based on Violence and Sexual innuendo but I would think it is safe for the grownups. The format of the movie and how the thought was presented is a bit different from what I thought it would be but overall I would say this was a good one that I do want to see again. Partially because when I say this, the sub titles for when they are speaking in another language were in Spanish ( I was in Mexico) when I saw this one.

As for Movie content, I will admit, I have always wondered what would happen if we really could access the full capacity of our minds. I don’t think what is portrayed is accurate but it is entertaining for sure.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 – Movie review

New-How-To-Train-Your-Dragon-2-

Rating PG
Time: 1 hour 45 minuets
Type: Fantasy/Action
Dilly Rating: Keeper
Language: None – This is a kids movie after all!
Main characters: (animated)

A continuation to the movie “How to train your dragon”.  Most sequels tent to ruin the original movie and kill the story altogether. I hate to see them and usually avoid them unless the original was awesome but, I am reluctant and will not spend a lot or be the first to see them. I would not say the same about this one. Well thought through, fills in the blanks to some of the gaps in the story and once again, has a good underlying meaning giving motivation and hope. Shows the meaning of working together and good friends. I will admit, while watching this movie, I wish my dog were there. (Just me I’m sure) either way, this is definitely a good movie and will be watched again.

Your new house really isn’t yours!

Numbers_341_to_385_Lordship_Lane_N17         (Please note this is not meant to offend anyone but rather educate or at least provoke thought about how a person approaches a situation)

I cannot say that I am a professional home buyer by any extent but I have now bought 2 homes (which I still currently own both of them still) but a thought came to me after the purchase of my second home and seeing that the reaction of the neighbors to the changes I made to the homes soon after my purchase. That is the cause for my question, Is you new house really yours? More in the eyes of others.. It is already understood that once you buy a new house, you are going to do things to make it feel like home to you. Things that include: Paint, landscape, plants. yard decor (my wife says plumbing fixtures and broke down cars are not yard decor), and so many other things.

I know upon buying our first home, the house had been neglected, the worst was the landscaping. There were TAM bushes all around the house with extreme amounts of overgrowth and a huge lilac bush square on top of the main sprinkler system. ( I will get pictures up as soon as I can) Our first move was to remove any bushes that were not salvageable and trim the ones that could be. In the process of doing this, several people made the comments that “those were their favorite plants” or “the last home owner loved that plant so much”. Not to upset anyone but I really did not care, it was our house now and there were things that I felt needed to be done. I do recall at one time discussing this with my wife and mentioning “if it is their favorite bush, why do they not have one of their own?”.  When we bought our most recent house my wife and I got several of the same comments.. Now  a comment like this coming from someone that is already a friend may be taken differently than that of someone that does not know you all that well. Then again, I do not recall any of the friends making comments like that, so, no biggy.  I will not go into great detail but there were several comments about “how would my mother-in-law (who we bought the house from) allow us to make the changes we did?”. I think it all too funny how quickly people forget that when there is a change of owner ship, everyone makes some changes to the house. Some are bigger than others but they are still done.. As we purchase a house, the natural need it so make that house become a home, not just a any home but OUR home.. I know the other night on the way home from an activity, as we approached the house I had a strong sense of being HOME. I cannot tell you the importance of that feeling after a solid year of feeling like nothing in our life was a long term situation. I was once told that a home is just a place to hang your hat, how false that really is. A Home is a place that a person can be themselves, a place that they can relax after a long day, a place to invite friends and family to for the intent of having a good time, a place of peace and above all a place that the spirit can dwell, bringing that, so needed level of peace to our lives. In all you do, make your house your home! You live there, you live with the way it was built and the way it looks more than anyone else..

Review

Visited 10/18/2014 @ 12:30 PM

Before you read the rest of the review, I have to note that this place was only open for several Hours and it was apparent that there was still a lot of training that was in progress..

I had heard that this place was open. Several restaurants had been in this location over the past several years and I must say that they start out with good food but, the quality slowly fades away. I am reluctantly optimistic. We went in around noon on a Friday expecting there to not be much of a crowd. there really wasn’t many people there but there was a few, here is what we experienced.

Building:
Good shape. the previous tenant had done a complete remodel so much of the interior construction was nice. walls painted black and white.  On the down side the carpet had trails from wear. If I was to give a suggestion, tear up the carpet and finish the carpeted areas to match the treated concrete.

Seating:
Most of the seating was leftovers so there was some mix and match Booths, chairs and tables but overall they were still in good shape so I cannot blame them for being money smart. They did add in a new bar  although it was posted on Facebook that they are currently not serving alcohol but hope to soon – this will be kept family friendly atmosphere like Olive Garden, Chilies, and other similar locations.

Music:
The music playing was a lot of Rock like AC/DC and such.. most of it was not bad but there was a few songs that were a bit hard for the “Family Environment”.

Service:
Service was really slow. Granted they were new and I could tell that the waitress was trying to learn everything all at once. At the time we were there it took about 30-40 min from ordering our food to be served. I would expect that this time will get faster as the cooks and waitresses get more adjusted to the processes

Food:
Food was great! Just the type that you would expect at a sports bar. filling, good size portions, not too pricey. We did notice that they do not use the standard fry sauce, it had more of a BBQ flavor to it. Onion rings were perfect and not overly oily. Fries were seasons and good to eat plain. Sand which was filling and good flavor, Nachos had plenty of toppings go keep you going ( fresh jalapenos kept the mouth on fire as well)

Ordered:
Chicken strips with fries – Loaded Nachos – Turkey bacon avocado sand which with onion rings and Chocolate cake and ice cream for desert.

Overall thoughts:
We will go back. there was more that I wanted to try but this time without the kids to keep the bill down. I do hope that this one will take hold and stay for a while.. Hoping that the food will stay good as well.

The art of nodding

NoddingI know, I know, this is not really an art… or, is it? Many people nod as an indication of greeting or acknowledgement. Much of this “Nod” is subconscious and thus is done based on thoughts that you are not making consciously. You may have had a conscious thought  about this at one time and then it is set in memory and just takes place “automatically” but, did you know that there is meaning to how you nod? Similar to the way information is sent subconsciously with a nod, it is likewise received the same way, leaving an undertone of emotion associated with that person. Here is what I am getting at. If you are sent before the king, you will notice that he is sitting in a throne that is conveniently placed up several steps making it so that even when he is sitting, he is higher than those he is speaking to. Placing him Higher or “better” than the people because of his royalty, wisdom, or any other reason they feel justified to be “above” the people. A nod performs a similar act, when you walk past a person that nods at you, do they nod upward (pride) or downward (humility) ?  Likewise, which direction do you nod? The way you nod in a greeting or acknowledgement environment shows the person that you are nodding at how you feel about them or rather if you feel that you are better than them. The nod upward is a way if trying to place yourself above the other person. A downward nod would indicate humility and respect. Also in relation to the way a person nods back, the lack of a nod (if it is recognized of course) in return can be meant as an insult. Now keep in mind that there are different meanings for each of these indicators in different cultures. Some of the variations that you should be aware of is similar to a downward nod can indicate agreement, a upward nod can also indicate disagreement or NO. As it relates to friends, (this is where it is a bit sketchy) an upward nod can indicated a less formal friendly greeting similar to, walking up to a friend and saying “hey Punk!” could be accepted as a less formal and friendly greeting whereas walking up to someone that you do not know as well and saying the same thing is considered an insult. It is believed that Nodding started as a less formal way to bow but still show respect.

Now that you know, How do you Nod? How do people Nod at you? but more importantly, how does knowing this affect the way you communicate and receive communications?

That Perfect Computer keyboard

k360Wow, OK , I do not want to seem like I am being completely negative but.. I AM. I have learned to hate computer keyboards. I have found over the years that a comfortable, good quality keyboard makes all the difference when you are spending more than just  a moment or two using it a day. I know when I was younger, ergonomics was something “OLD” people thought about. I now realize that it is not “OLD” but rather smart people that think about these types of things. Here are some of the things that I would love to see in a keyboard that as of now I cannot seem to find:

1-    Short throw keys. The more your fingers have to move to depress the keys, the more fatigue and strain. Laptops seem to have this figured out  but are lacking in other areas.

2-    Wrist supports. For the purpose of not having problems like tendinitis or other wrist problems. You have to have proper support. I know that you can buy an additional wrist supports but that is just one more thing to take up space and have to move when adjusting your desk to accommodate projects.

3-    No heat. Like I said, laptops have perfect amounts of throw but, because of the electronics, there is a lot of heat coming from the keys and wrist rests. This also makes it super uncomfortable and hard to use for long a duration of time.

4-    Full keyboard. I know that some people will argue with me, and I understand. A lot of people don’t use their 10-key  but I do. I want a keyboard that has it all because I do it all.

5-    Sleek. Just because I want a 10-key and short throw keys does not mean it needs to be huge and clunky, nor do I want have several pieces all over the desk to make a complete unit. Because I do it all, I am often sliding my keyboard around the desk to accommodate projects, paper for sketches for ideas, or any other thing that happens to fall on my plate.

I can tell you this, from my experience, Logitech seems to be the closest to what I am looking for and maybe some day they will come across this and make a product that is what I am looking for… I have been trying out the K360 and it is pretty good but I would make a few changes to accommodate the criteria I mentioned above.. for a long time I have been using the MK700/MK710. I love it. I like the layout but it is a bit big, I do believe that it could be reduced a bit and still keep that layout. Also the throw on the keys is a bit deep and because of the way it is constructed, it does start to have “Sticky keys” that wont depress when typing quickly because they use a plastic on plastic sliding system.

I really don’t know if this is suppose to be a review of what I use or if this is just me Venting ( probably just venting) but I thought that this may be helpfull to others that face the same problem.. If I do find the PERFECT fit. I will let you know and get a review out on it quickly. in the meanwhile, you have questions about the hardware that I am currently using, please feel free to ask.

Appliance repair

appiliance repair

Today’s views on appliances may have changed from what they were 15-20 years ago but, there are still a few of us out there that want to and realize that repairing what we have is often less costly and gives us a more reliable unit. This whole post is sparked from my experience trying to get a part for my whirlpool drier. Now of course I did look online and found the specific part (3399878) on Amazon for half the price ($11.49) in a kit but, the shipping would mean I had to wait 2 days to get it. So, I started calling around to find the best deal I could locally. I ALWAYS start with the main location, in this case a Sears Parts center(Sears Parts & Repair 971 W Center St Provo, UT 84601), to get a foundation price. They quoted me $29,##. As I called around I found a place that had the “same” part for $20 (Best Buy Appliance – 665 N State St Orem, UT 84057) and $10(Appliances Repair Center – 354 N State St Orem, UT 84057.. )

Now the obvious choice would be the $10 right? Well… he was currently moving store locations and was working out of his home. He offered to meet me somewhere but seemed really (and understandably from his side) hesitant to have me come there (red flag). I understand his position but without a place that I can go to in a warranty situation I could just not go forward with it. So I set my sights on the place that had it for $20. I really should have gotten the clue when I called because when I called, I told him I was looking to see if he had a part in stock. He asked what the part was and so, I started giving him the part number “3399..”. Mid number, he interrupted me and asked no, what part is it. I thought, Oh, he needs to narrow his search in his books by general part first.(understandable right?) so, I told him it was a thermal cut out fuse. Immediately he said, yup we have it, it’s about $20. Really?? I thought, how would he know which one out of all of the variations out there?.. oh well it was closer than sears and less expensive so I told him I would be there about noon while on my lunch break. Now I did google this place first and it had several 5 star reviews and one 1 star review ( all of which I read). And my outlook was, this must be a diamond in the wroth. Lunch time came and I rushed off to get my part so I would still have enough time to get gas in my buggy and eat. Best Buy AppilianceWhen  I got there I first thought “ wow this better be one good diamond!” well, not really, it was “ what no parking at all?”. There were several washers and driers out front which when I walked in, I realized were the ones cleared out to make room enough to make a path from the door to the counter.. the rest of the “sales floor” was completely filled with half assembled appliances that were nasty by appearance to match the rest of the décor (or clutter) of the store and that was just my initial impression. There was another customer so I looked around while I waited and listened to the conversation. He seemed a little pushy toward a service sale over straight forward advice. As I wandered, I noticed sighs everywhere “NO REFUNDS”, “NO EXCHANGES”,”NO RETURNS”, “NO WARRANTIES”. Hidden behind one of the nasty fridges was a sign that said “20% restocking fee on all returns” which seemed odd considering there were “NO RETURNS” When it was my turn, I showed him the part I needed. He tested it to be sure ( that is a good thing)  and then went to digging through several apparently unorganized parts boxes. After calling and asking several questions to the person on the other end of the line about my part for several minutes, he came back with 2 bags. One had a part that looked nothing like the one I had, and another one that was the kit for the one I needed and one other part. The kit was , if I recall correctly $38 through him but, he assured me that the one by its self was the right part (even though you could tell he wasn’t quite sure himself). I said “OK but if this is not the right part can I return it?”. “No”, he said, “there are no returns, once you are out the door it is yours”.. Humm he’s not SURE that it is the right part but if it’s not, he will not take it back either.. Fine! I need to get back to work.. I pulled out my debit card and… “sorry cash only”.. OK I’ll have to go get some money. I left, got some gas, and went to Sears, nuff said.
Sears repair centerOn the way to sears, I had forgotten to grab my part.. “crap I thought.. well I still have the part # on my phone, I should be OK”. When I  got there, it was clean (like you would expect) I kindly waited in line and when it was my turn I told them I needed to get a thermal fuse for my drier. The associate on the next line says “ oh yea, I have not pulled that one yet but it is “ .. and proceeded to tell the person helping me exactly where it was at. When they brought the part out, I realized it was the kit, for about the same price as the other place was trying to sell me the wrong part for. I asked about the return policy and they indicated if the bag is opened (so you could do a rough test fit without opening it)  they would not take it back for a refund but, if the part is installed, works, and then goes bad within a specified time, they are more than happy to exchange it for a new one. If the bag was still sealed, they would also be willing to offer a refund.  I got the part and was on my way with the correct part and a return policy to boot.

Lesson learned: not always is the less expensive part really less expensive.

A Mechanics Car

montanaRecently I had some time to spend with a focus on my own cars.. it is funny, having the skills to perform required repairs to your own vehicles doesn’t meant that they actually happen.  I have always prided myself on my cars being well maintained but as time has gone on and time seems to move faster, the time to keep up on this seems to elude me. My wife’s van has (fortunately for me) been mostly reliable and requiring very little work but with the registration being due,  there were some things that I had been putting off that had to be dealt with.  Although none of them were (BIG) or so I thought, they were more just time. An alternator was begging for replacement, the electrical was acting up (it was like random flickering of Christmas lights when you applied the brake with the right hand turn signal on). And the dreaded Check engine light was on with a PO440 code (EVAP problem) I knew that the fuel sending unit was acting up because the fuel gauge was acting up.

I braced for the impact on my time and wallet as I cleared space in the shop to be able to work on it with some level of comfort.  The Engine was warm the with the first attempt so I started with the electrical. As I inspected the Right rear light assembly I noticed that the ground connection was burnt/charred so the assumption that the ground connection was insufficient for the demand (common problem on these vehicles) so I immediately dug into adding a larger ground connection as shown below:

As I was re-assembling the assembly, I noticed that a few of the bulbs were the wrong ones.. simply by correcting them, they began to work correctly. “its getting the new ground anyway, I’m already done!”. I moved on to the front where I found that one of the twist lock light sockets had disintegrated. Although this would seem like a small problem it was a bit tricky finding replacements, mostly due to the lack of having a uniform naming process in parts stores systems..  The first one I found, and it was only one of the 2 I needed, was $47.00..  later I was able to match one up at AZ for $13.00 so that is the direction I went. After re-wiring the first one, there was another problem.. the Ground connection somewhere to that and the driver side headlight was not connecting properly. This was causing the drivers headlight to be dim as well as flash in relation to the blinker. Adding a good ground there made a huge difference and I was starting to fee l accomplished.

The next fix was the Alternator, usually a easy fix but not on this one. There are 2 ways of pulling the alternator off of these. 1-remove the entire windshield wiper assembly, washer fluid tank and get it out that way or 2- undo 2 of the sub frame bolts and lower the entire motor a few inches to get it to clear that way. I went for lowering the motor. Its amazing what 1” can do to hinder a project. After breaking an aluminum bracket, it was out.. fortunately this was an opportunity to rag on my wife about needing a tig welder when I had a friend use his to weld the bracket back together. It is on the shopping list now, problem is determining where on the list it needs to be.

I will say 2 things that will help you. When you are tired, quit. Your mind no longer looks at things in such a way that it can solve problems and causes you to keep trying the same thing that has not worked the last 100 times. Second, lift up the van from both sides when lowering the sub frame.. it will prevent the body from twisting and make it a lot easier to get the bolts back in.

The nice part about all of the frustration on the Alternator is that while I was staring (glaring) in frustration I noticed a hose fitting that had broken off of the EVAP purge valve that was quickly repaired with a bit if heat shrink tube and JB weld.  So far that repair has shown to have solved the problem without replacing the fuel pump so.. that has resulted well.

Now that everything is fixed we are playing the waiting game. No matter how much you fix. The computer must confirm that it is all fixed and sometimes that takes some time and many miles.. Hopefully that will be accomplished soon!

Inconsistent updates and a Promise! kinda~

timelyAlright.. what a mess. I have been trying to do updates on a weekly basis and have found out, it just does not work.. trying to get information formatted and ready to publish while it is still timely is just not as easy as I had hoped with the way that this year has gone. I will say this, it is not that I am not doing anything. Recently I lost my Dillysmobile.com URL while trying to transfer it to a new hosting account. I am glad to say I have it back and I am now in the process of building it to fit what Dillys Mobile has evolved to.. Check it out! Click on the picture below! Let me know what ya think!

That said.. I am also in Mexico again.. Good news. I have some personal time to figure out things. Bad news is, I will not get many projects done.  In fact if you have been on the Facebook page you will have seen the motor that was all torn apart.. well it is still that way because I was informed on Tuesday this last week that I would be leaving Wednesday for a week and a half and the part did not come in until Thursday.

As this  timing issue has evolved, this is how we are going to do things from here on..(maybe)

1- I will still do Blog posts on updates from time to time but no guarantee on how often because they have to be squeezzzzed in where they can be

2- More posts will be about projects / toughs/ reviews and other NOT time sensitive information. I will do what I can to have them published once a week

****QUESTION**** when would be the best time for you to see these posts?
(be sure to click “Leave a reply” and let me know)

3- Non time sensitive posts will hopefully have more focused topics and be more formally prepared with better pictures and details on one subject.

I am hoping soon to add video and audio files for more fun too once the equipment is working.

4-  More time sensitive info will be released more informally on Facebook.. Be sure to follow us there

That said.. I have SEVERAL other posts that I need to work on.. there is bait.. enjoy!

Hiking Timp

At the saddle
At the saddle

This past 2 weeks has been absolutely insane! Mostly in the Pain department. We did finally hike Timp (Mt Timapanogos) but I will say it was both a success and a failure. Success being that I learned a lot about hiking trips for a person at my age and condition as well as a reminder of some good old basics from the scouting days. Also we did accomplish a lot considering the circumstances. The Failure comes from the fact that we did not get to the peak of Timp.  So, Here is the story. The initial plan was to leave the trail head between 3-4 so that we would have the time necessary to get to Timp basin before dark and have adequate time to set up camp, eat, and just prepare for the night. In reality, we left the trail head at about 5:30, an hour and a half late. So we were hiking in the dark for about an hour using flash lights that we had only bought the night before. One of them was pretty good but the one that I was using was , well…. POOP! It would have been alright but the buttons only worked about half the time and even with it being a LED light, the battery started to die after the first hour.

Next because we were so ill prepare and SOOOOOO out of shape we drank most all of our water before we even reached camp.. had I been smart, I would have topped off the water at the last water fall going up the trail but,…. We didn’t.  when we got to camp, we hurried and setup, tried to cook some dinner and went to bed. Cooking was a mess as well. The stove we decided to take was nice and small, perfect for hiking but in the end it was a fail in itself. It would light and have to be either on HIGH or it would blow out and if the wind happened to blow the knob at all it would still just go out. So both dinner and breakfast were a mess and left a lot to be desired.  After burning spam and eggs for breakfast, having an almost raw dinner and warping my mess kits pans, it is decided that either that stove will be fixed or garbage!

That night (because we had no time to find a good spot) we were right off the trail. If you have ever hiked Timp you know that there are people hiking the trail all night long. For some reason the people hiking the trail were astonished at the fact that there was a tent with people sleeping in it on the mountain and thought that staring at it with flashlights blaring while announcing to the world “OH LOOK, A TENT! I WONDER IF THERE IS ANYONE SLEEPING IT IT?”  all night long! Which gave me a great idea. I will explain in the ideas below.

The next morning we woke up and after dealing with a crappy charcoal breakfast, packed up what we had for day packs (a fanny pack, a baby carrier and a full backpack) Yea there is a story there as well.  My sis-in-law thought it would be fun to bring her, not yet one year old, along for the ride (not if you want much sleep). In the hustle, my wife forgot to pack her day pack in her stuff, and I had my small pack. So, my wife packed the full pack for carrying water, I had my small pack. Now normally you would head for the peak first thing in the morning while it was still cool.. no, we waited longer because none of us even thought to take jackets (brilliant, I know) leaving camp about 9:30-10am  we instead headed for emerald lake, miles out of the way, to get water restocked. To my surprise there was a Huge section of the cliff face that had fallen in over the years since I was last there re-routing the trail and making it much more steep and rough. Arriving to Emerald lake and already feeling exhausted for the day, we pumped more water and headed for the summit. From Emerald lake, most of the trail was rock slide and snow, this made the trail very slow and painful. The last leg the saddle, there had been another rock slide and the “New path” which was more of an “short cut” now utilized by everyone was almost strait up the mountain. Progress here was slow. About 5-10’ of progress between each rest. Once to the saddle, the feeling of Altitude sickness and Vertigo were getting overwhelming. With not feeling well and having a baby to protect, we ate lunch and decided it was time to head back. Coming so close to reaching the summit but felling that it was time to head back, it was disappointing but we all agreed the summit would have to wait for another day.

Heading back the way we should have come, we got back to base camp and packed up thing in prep for the final descent. Feet were already sore, Fuel tanks were on empty, aching backs were setting in and we still had miles to go.  The entire hike down felt like walking on a bed of nails (or legos) barefoot. Mid way down I came to the realization that stopping for breaks only fueled the pain fire and so I would walk. Maybe a little slower but I could not stop! Reaching the van again at almost 5pm, I had had it! I was done! My body would give not more!  I felt accomplished but I felt defeated.

Although this was painful and we did not make it, my determination has only increased. Next year we will make it and we will use the lessons we learned to ensure that it happens.

Lessons learned:

-Pack more water and fill up everything at the last falls

-Take less food (we packed out most of what we took in – dead weight)

-Test ALL equipment before packing it. Faulty stoves and flash lights ruin a trip.

-Leave the trail head ON TIME!

-Don’t bring little kids. This is not the trail for them.

-Make a list and check it twice

-Jackets keep you warm

-Pack less weight!

-Get in better shape before the next time!

-Pack a light weight and super bright spot light so that the next time a hiker decide to announce to the world, “OH LOOK, A TENT! I WONDER IF THERE IS ANYONE SLEEPING IT IT?”, I can spot light them right in the face and announce “OH LOOK, A HIKER! I WONDER IF THEIR SIGHT IS AS IMPORTANT AS MY SLEEP!”

Nuff said! See the pics below.
